June 2019

This project involved a full refurbishment and extension of a Victorian terraced house in East London. Our client appointed Bermudez + Mai to design, plan and oversee the project until completion. We secured planning permission for a 5m single storey rear extension that spanned the entire width of the house. The ground floor layout was completely reconfigured to improve the flow of the internal space and make the most of natural light. We created a large open-plan kitchen, living and dining area with views out to the garden. The design also allowed for a new utility room and shower room to be included on the ground floor.

An existing 3m extension was demolished to make way for the new contemporary extension, one that would fit harmoniously with the exterior of the original house. We restored the existing exterior brickwork back to its original colour and sourced the new extension's brickwork to match.

An essential part of the design was to introduce natural light further into the house. By removing a load bearing wall and incorporating bi-folding doors and a large skylight, we were able to draw in natural light, creating a bright and spacious open-plan area.
