The Mersea House is one of Bermudez + Mai's signature projects. After a successful collaboration with the client on a 'flip', they came to us having purchased a site on Mersea Island wishing to build their dream retirement home. B+Ma designed the house around an open plan ground floor space, opening out onto the garden and a luxurious master-bedroom space with a walk-in ensuite and ample wardrobe space. The master bedroom opens out onto a recessed balcony providing protection from the elements, with views of the sea.

The clients desired a unique and contemporary home and soon fell in love with an early concept sketch of a timber-clad asymmetrical design. Whilst being visually distinctive in form and material application, the design responds to the varying heights of properties to either side and allows an efficient and spacious floor-plan within a restricted site.

The asymmetrical roof is vaulted internally creating a huge sense of height and space, allowing natural light to flood the first floor spaces. The design uses the passive-house principles of solar gain and loss through design and maximises natural ventilation. Our clients were so pleased with their stunning home and two years on still feel excited about living there.
