Classic Extension to a Victorian Terrace

Bermudez + Mai were enlisted to extend and improve the family space within a Victorian terrace house in East London.

About our Client

Our Clients, the homeowners were after more space and a better quality of life for their family. They were let down by previous architects unable to secure planning on a extension and approached Bermudez + Mai after a recommendation. From the first site visit we could see the huge potential of this property. We were appointed to design, plan and oversee the project until completion.

Challenge

Our client had outgrown their living space. The ground floor area was dark and underutilised, with an inconvenient and outdated layout that didn't meet the family's needs. There was a small extension that blocked natural light entering the middle of the house. Existing areas were closed off from one another and the family felt separated. The client wanted a larger, better designed extension to open up the space. They wanted to create a new social hub of the home with a better connection out to the garden.

Solution

After discussing the goals of the project, Bermudez + Mai developed a design to improve the ground floor layout and give our client the space they required.

We secured planning permission for a 5m Extension spanning the width of the house. The existing extension was demolished and a larger extension replaced the old.

A new open plan kitchen and dining space was created around a large kitchen island, giving the home a central hub the clients longed for. By re-configuring the ground floor layout, we were able to fit in a separate utility room and shower room without compromising on space. These internal alterations generated a greater sense of flow between rooms. Natural light was introduced further into the house by taking down dividing walls, adding a generous skylight to the new extension and bi-fold doors with access and views into the garden.

Externally, we restored brickwork on the existing house, which had been painted red, back to its original colour and sourced the extension's brickwork to match. The contemporary extension is sympathetic in design to harmonise well with the original house.

We were able to increase the size and value of this home and improve a family's quality of living through considered design. Through a close collaboration with our client, we were able to provide ample space and an ideal layout in a home they love.
